Advantages of Self Reliance

Advantages of self reliance are usually thought of in individual terms. But is it good for the country as well? The individual security and freedom you obtain are definitely some of the plusses of pursuing the self-reliant lifestyle. But what about the nation as a whole?

In June of 2010, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton remarked that she would like to see the tax system of the United States become more like that of Brazil, a socialist nation, where the wealthy are heavily taxed to help the poor.

Her argument is the poor in the United States would be better off. But would they be? I recently spent some time in Brazil, and I wasn't impressed by what I saw. In Brazil, there is either great wealth or abject poverty. And honestly, as far as I could see, those who were wealthy weren't any better off than many of those in the upper middle class in the United States.

So what went wrong? If socialism is such a great system, why isn't it working in Brazil?

The Advantages of Self Reliance

One of the advantages of self reliance is a healthy nation. For any country to not only survive, but also to thrive, learning self reliance is crucial. In virtually every area of our lives, with the exception of self defense, the government is incapable of accomplishing what we individuals can do ourselves.

That's because you cannot create a one-size-fits-all policy that will work for the more than 300 million individuals who live in this country. People become poor for all sorts of reasons. Perhaps they have a drug or alcohol addiction or are being raised by parents with an addiction. Perhaps they are in an abusive relationship. Or perhaps they lack sufficient training or resources.

Recovery is an Individual Pursuit

But no matter what the problem is, you can never force people to help themselves. That's one of the advantages of self reliance. The addict has to want to get well. The one in an abusive relationship has to want to break free and be willing to undergo counseling so he or she doesn't get into another abusive relationship.

And the person who is lacking training and resources must be willing to sacrifice and work hard to obtain that training or resources. There is a poem by Emily Dickinson that reads "Success is counted sweetest by those who ne'er succeed." The gist of the poem is you can never truly appreciate something unless it is hard to obtain. That's one of the advantages of self reliance. You learn to appreciate what you have and obtain true happiness.

Unless there is great need, you are never really motivated to do much, and that's the danger of socialism. When the government starts giving handouts, you learn to depend on others rather than yourself, and eventually you lose both your motivation and your self respect. That's a toxic mix for any individual as well as the country he or she lives in.
