Are there Degrees of Homesteading?

Your website is wonderful.

We have always known we would Homestead; we just did not know how, and now it seems real thanks to websites like yours, and we know we can do it.

Question: I know you can homestead to any degree all the way to going off the grid completely, but what does your family do?

- Do you have insurance (for car and home and health)?

- How much money do we need?

I know the degree of it is our choice but I want to make good decisions by reading about what others have done successfully. Could you share your own story on these subjects?

Hi Kristy!

You have to go with what's right for you, but here are my opinions on some of the issues you brought up:

Health insurance

Just my opinion here, but health insurance is the real culprit behind the skyrocketing medical costs that have occurred in the past few decades. If we have health insurance, we're more likely to choose the most expensive treatments, thinking (sometimes erroneously) that the most expensive medicine or treatment is the best.

Also, because the majority of us aren't shopping for the best prices, hospitals are encouraged to waste items, causing even higher costs.

That being said, it would be foolish to not have some kind of medical coverage. But you can also cut down on medical costs by pursuing healthy habits, such as exercising daily and eating healthy foods. Also you can save a lot of money and have excellent medical care by traveling overseas for necessary surgeries.

Car and Home Insurance

Our state law requires us to have liability insurance, so we do have that. But since we are not making car payments, we don't have comprehensive and collision coverage. Instead, we keep money in savings to cover emergencies. We also have enough money saved to buy a used car, if we needed it.

Home Insurance

We absolutely have home insurance. Our home is the biggest investment we have, and it would be foolish not to have insurance on it.

How Much Money Do You Need to Homestead?

In my opinion, homesteading is a way of life rather than an actual place to live, so you can pursue the homesteading lifestyle under any circumstance, whether you own an acreage or live in an apartment.

But if you are drawn to the homesteading life, you will want that acreage of land someday. So you should start a savings plan and get out of debt. Learn to live frugally and you'll soon be building your savings account.
