Bulk Mullein Just $3.75 For Four Ounces

Bulk mullein is useful to have on hand, as it's an excellent remedy for coughs and sore throats. Mullein has been known in the past as "Candlewick Plant", "Hag's Taper" and "Torches" because it can burn so easily once it is completely dried. Apparently, a single spark can set this herb on fire, and before cotton was discovered, people used the herb as a wick in lamps.

Use this dried mullein with the mesh tea infuser. Pour boiling water over the leaves and allow it to steep for at least ten minutes to make tea. Sweeten with honey. It's excellent for coughs and pulmonary problems. It also relaxes you so you can sleep. Each bag contains approximately 1 and 3/4 cups of dried mullein.

Although its days as a fire starter are over, the herb is still useful as a soothing tea and for lung ailments. As early as the seventeenth century, farmers would give the herb to their cattle to help heal lung diseases, and at one time, poachers would throw the seeds of this herb into the water to intoxicate the fish and make it easier to catch them.

The leaves and flowers of this herb can be used.

Homesteading Medicine Cabinet

A year or so ago, a cough was going around in my family that no one could get rid of. Finally, a family friend recommended we drink mullein tea sweetened with honey. I was amazed at how quickly all of our coughs went away, and this wonderful herb has been a family favorite ever since. Now I buy bulk mullein regularly and keep it on hand.

Mullein works by soothing an irritated throat and therefore easing coughing. It has a soothing and softening effect on the skin as well. It also works as an astringent, stopping the flow of blood or other secretions.

The next time you have insomnia, make a cup of Mullein tea. An infusion of the herb works as a mild sedative to help you sleep.

You can also relieve hemorrhoids by applying a poultice of Mullein to the affected area..

Steep the flowers in olive oil for 21 days, and then apply it to cuts and scratches to kill germs.

Growing Tips

Start this herb indoors in a window greenhouse. It's important to start them inside, because birds, especially finches, love the seeds and will likely eat them before they have a chance to sprout. Press the seeds gently into a growing medium and give them two weeks to germinate. Transplant the seedlings into a larger pot and then put them in your garden in the early summer.

Your Mullein plants will produce flowers the following year.
