Cast Iron Dutch Oven Recipes
Cast iron Dutch oven recipes are good to have on hand should the power go out and you're unable to use your electric range.
It's also a great way to keep the heat out of your kitchen in the summertime and outside where it belongs.
The Importance of Being Prepared
I can't emphasize enough how crucial it is to prepare yourself as much as possible during these turbulent days.
No, you shouldn't live your life in fear of what is to come.
But an EMP or the collapse of the dollar is much like a tornado:
Either could happen, and if you're unprepared, they can be devastating, but if you know how to take shelter, they will still be a huge inconvenience, but you'll survive them just fine.
And you don't have to spend thousands of dollars in those expensive freeze dried meals, either.
Buying and storing dried beans and learning now how to garden and grow your own food is doable even on the smallest budget as well as cooking without electricity, which brings me to cast iron Dutch oven recipes.

You can cook virtually anything with a Camp Dutch Oven .
Cast Iron Dutch Oven Recipes and My Dutch Oven Experience
Last summer, I bought a Camp Dutch Oven
for about $60, and just recently I bought a cast iron combo cooker
for less than that which can also double as a camp Dutch oven.
I also bought a lid stand
to lift the cookware up so you can set coals underneath and a handy Dutch oven lid lifter .
Last night I put them to use to make dinner for the family.
I made soup using dried black-eyed peas I had put on to soak that morning, turkey broth from a turkey I had roasted over the weekend, brown rice and dehydrated carrots.
I got the idea from this book .

The soup I made came to a boil quickly and cooked great with this Camp Dutch Oven .
Unlike cooking with a solar oven, which takes a lot of time and practice, cooking outdoors with cast iron cookware is much easier and faster.
And the food was amazing.
I have never made such moist cornbread, and the soup cooked up really quickly.
You can cook all kinds of amazing meals this way.
I have included the recipe below, but really any type of beans and broth will work.
This really is a fool-proof way to cook and not nearly as intimidating as it may first seem.
Cast Iron Dutch Oven Recipes and Cooking Outdoors
A charcoal briquette starter like this one
is easy to use and will get your charcoals lit quickly.
I had never used one before yesterday, yet I was able to get my charcoals going in about ten minutes.

A charcoal lighter like this one
will make lighting charcoals quick and easy.
To bake bread, you will need to place about 17 lit coals under your Dutch oven and then place an additional eight lit charcoals directly on the lid.
I did the same for the soup.
If your charcoals burn down before your cooking time ends, you will need to add additional ones.
It was a windy day yesterday, so I had to add new coals about half way through the cooking time.
I cooked this on an old grill our neighbors gave us, but you can also cook it on the ground in a fire pit.
If you do make a fire pit, clear the ground three feet in diameter and surround the pit with large stones, and watch the coals carefully.
It took a little over an hour to prepare this meal.
