This Corndog Recipe is a Healthy and Delicious Part of Frugal Living

The corndog is a classic kid favorite, but usually isn't the healthiest of choices. Studies have shown that eating regular hot dogs such as the type available in most supermarkets increase your risk of cancer. There are soy hot dogs available, but they're expensive, and again, we're back to processed food.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could make your own dogs at home, using safe, healthy soy dogs?

Now you can. I made these the other day and got a "thumbs up" of approval from the family. I ground the corn fresh, along with the wheat for my cornmeal and flour.

Then I used soy dogs that have no nitrates in them. By baking these, I reduced the fat. Mine weren't as pretty as commercial dogs, but they tasted much better.

Corn dogs More importantly, I knew what was going into the bodies of my children. Great taste that lets you breathe easier!

By the way, there's been a lot of concern lately about how healthy soy really is. Some experts are currently down on soy, while others see it as an excellent and safe source of protein. Choose whatever type of dog you feel comfortable with for this recipe. There are many brands available at your local health food store.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 8 popsicle sticks
  • 8 soy dogs

Prepare the Batter

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Combine the cornmeal, flour, salt and baking powder. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg and milk.

Add to the flour mixture to make a thick batter. Let this stand for about five minutes.

Insert the popsicle sticks into the dogs and then roll the dogs in the batter. Place on a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for thirty minutes or until cornbread is browned.

Makes eight dogs.
