This Corndog Recipe is a Healthy and Delicious Part of Frugal Living

Corndog is a classic kid favorite, but usually isn't the healthiest of choices. Studies have shown that eating regular hot dogs such as the type available in most supermarkets increase your risk of cancer. Isn't it a shame that such a fun treat has become so healthy and even dangerous over the years?

There is a soy corndog version available, but it's expensive, and again, we're back to processed food.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could make your own healthy corndog at home, using safe, healthy soy dogs or other types of dogs you prefer?

Now you can. I made this corndog recipe the other day and got a "thumbs up" of approval from the family. To make this corndog recipe, I ground the corn fresh, along with the wheat for my cornmeal and flour.

Then I used soy dogs that have no nitrates in them. By baking this version of corndog, I reduced the fat. Mine weren't as pretty as commercial dogs, but they tasted much better.

More importantly, I knew what was going into the bodies of my children. This corndog recipe has great taste that lets you breathe easier!

Corn dogs By the way, there's been a lot of concern lately about how healthy soy really is. Some experts are currently down on soy, while others see it as an excellent and safe source of protein. Choose whatever type of dog you feel comfortable with for this recipe. There are many brands available at your local health food store.

Corndog Recipe Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 8 popsicle sticks
  • 8 soy dogs

Prepare the Batter

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

Combine the cornmeal, flour, salt and baking powder. In a separate bowl, mix together the egg and milk.

Add to the flour mixture to make a thick batter. Let this stand for about five minutes.

Insert the popsicle sticks into the dogs and then roll the dogs in the batter. Place on a greased baking sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for thirty minutes or until cornbread is browned.

Makes eight dogs.
