Creative Ways to Save Money

Creative ways to save money help you stretch that dollar and get out of debt. If you're ready to become debt free, here are a few tips from Mary Hunt, author of The Complete Cheapskate: How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out, and Break Free from Money Worries Forever.

Creative Ways to Save Money
Food Storage Tips

Both cottage cheese and sour cream will last nearly twice as long if you store them upside down in your refrigerator. And by the way, you can also make your own sour cream from sour cream powder bought in bulk . The powder lasts for years if properly stored and tastes better (my personal opinion) than anything you get at the store.

Having a freezer is another one of the creative ways to save money. Keep your brown and powdered sugar, coffee, nuts and popcorn kernels in the freezer to help them last longer. Sugar that is frozen will be less lumpy. Coffee and nuts will remain fresh far longer, and popcorn kernels will retain their popping ability. No more wasted kernels!

Creative Ways to Save Money
Cooking Tips

Investing in a chest freezer is well worth the expense. It will pay for itself in a year with the money you save.
Instead of buying gourmet coffee, buy dry ground and add in a cinnamon stick broken into small pieces. Or add a few drops of vanilla extract to your brewed coffee.

Plus, did you know that making your own cookware is another one of the creative ways to make money? Make your own pizza stone cheap for the best gourmet pizza out there. I use my pizza stones all the time and paid handsomely for them. I wish I had known about this cheaper version. According to Hunt, an unglazed terra cotta tile will work just as well. Make your pizza dough and spread it out on the tile. Then add toppings and placed it in your preheated oven on the lowest rack.

Save a bundle on paper napkins by making your own cloth napkins out of left over sheets or other soft fabric you have on hand. It also helps to avoid waste.

Creative Ways to Save Money
Cleaning Tips

Dip strips of cheesecloth into a mixture of lemon oil and water and then allow them to dry. You'll have your own, lovely smelling dust cloths at a fraction of the price.
Sometimes the easiest ways to save money involve getting rid of things rather than buying them. By clearing out the clutter in your home, you make your house safer, more beautiful and a more pleasant place to live in.

You can make your own dust cloths. In a bowl mix together two cups of water and one fourth cup of lemon oil. Dip strips of cheesecloth into the mixture and then allow them to dry. You can also make your own household deodorizer by adding a cinnamon stick or a few whole cloves into your vacuum cleaner bag and vacuuming your home.

Creative Ways to Save Money
And Your Health

Brush and floss daily and you will drastically cut down your risk of gum disease and costly dental procedures. Good oral hygiene will also help prevent cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

And if you do have to go to the doctor, ask him for free samples. Also make sure you request a generic prescription to save money.
