Essential Oil in Oil Burners

by Jayme
(Canton, CT, USA)

Hello,

I stumbled across your site while I was looking into recipes for homemade soap. I'm really getting into making my own body, beauty, and cleaning products; I can't stand all the chemicals that I've been putting on my skin!
I really enjoyed your section on stress (I suffer from an anxiety disorder) and descriptions of the essential oils.

I recently purchased an oil burner: (the oil goes in a bowl on top of a candle so it can evaporate). I like to put tangerine oil in it, because I find it clean smelling and uplifting when I'm drawing and painting. Should I be diluting the essential oil? Or is it okay that it's pure since it is just being diffused in the air?

Thanks for your wisdom,

Jayme

Essential Oils Should Always Be Diluted
by: Sue Merriam

Hi Jayme!

Thanks so much for your kind words about my site. :-)

You should never put pure essential oil in a burner (or just about anywhere else, for that matter). Instead, the oil should always be diluted.

Instead, put water in the burner's reservoir and then add a few drops of essential oil to the water.

Enjoy your essential oils and happy painting!

Sue
