Homesteading Today
It Is Still Possible

Talk about homesteading today, and most people think of living off the land and being self-sufficient. But is it still possible to earn free land from the government by proving you can live there, just like people did a century ago?

The answer is yes, if you are willing to live in places such as New Richland, Minnesota or Osborne, Kansas. Several small towns - most of them located in the rural Midwest - are looking for residents and willing to give you a free parcel of land if you are willing to move there.

What's the Catch?

To pursue your goal of homesteading today, you won't be living on an acreage, but rather in a small town. The lots are usually part of a subdivision being built in a particular community.

Most require you build a house - no mobile homes allowed - within one year of receiving the free land. You must provide proof that you will have the funds to build a home (usually a lender's pre-approval letter) and a floor plan or design of your proposed home in order to pursue your dream of homesteading today. You must also have title insurance.

Some communities will assess you for part of the cost to develop your property with streets, curb and gutter as well as water and sewer. Usually, you are allowed to pay this out over ten to fifteen years.

All of these communities have small populations and are in rural areas. After all, if people were moving there in droves, they wouldn't have to offer free land. Still, if you don't mind the small town life, this could be a great opportunity for you to start homesteading today. Here are some places where free land is available:

Kansas

Kansas has gotten a bad rap over the years, probably because so many have only seen this sunny state from the window of their cars while speeding through on their way to Colorado or California. To lure people to their state, Kansas became the forerunner in offering free land and homesteading today, giving you the chance to pursue your dream of homesteading today.

At the time of this writing, twelve communities in the heart of Kansas were offering free land, including Mankato, Stockton, Osborne, Plainsville, Lincoln, Tescott, Wilson, Ellsworth, Kanopolis, and Holyrood, and Marquette. To see all the communities available in Kansas, check out the state website. A map on the site will show you the location of each of the communities.

Minnesota

New Richland, Minnesota, is a small town located about 75 miles to the south of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The city is offering free land in their Homestake Subdivision. According to their website, some lenders will allow the free land to be used as equity (down payment) for a home construction loan, if you have sufficient income.

Nebraska

Located in the Southwestern section of the state, just south of North Platte, the small community of Curtis is offering free lots in either their Roll'n Hills Addition or their Arrowhead Meadows Addition next to the Arrowhead Meadows Golf Course. All lots are on paved concrete streets with all utilities. My son with one of our nubian goats

North Dakota

According to their website, Northwest North Dakota has an opportunity for 5,000 people. Not the first 5,000 they say, but the right 5,000. It's not that they're being unfriendly, it's just that they're warning you that the winters in North Dakota can be a challenge, and I can personally attest that the winters up there are cold!. If you don't mind wind chills of sixty below Fahrenheit, you might consider North Dakota.

The pros of living there and homesteading today in small town North Dakota include not having to lock your doors and friendly communities. North Dakota is one of the safest states in the union. The cons include fewer job opportunities. If you have your own home business that you can take with you - such as an internet business - or you are retired and have financial security, this could be a good opportunity for you.
