Unfortunately You Can't
by: Sue Merriam

Unfortunately homesteading is typically not an option with a condemned property, depending on the laws in California.

There is actually a lot involved with making a condemned building livable again, and it could likely cost you a great deal of money and effort before you're done. A lot will depend on the city you live in, but generally, you must have an inspection done before you begin working on the project, put down a cash deposit, hire licensed contractors to do the work and have another inspection done before you can move in. All of the costs, fees and red tape involved could be substantial.

It would be far simpler to either save up and buy your own small piece of land in the country or check out one of these rural areas that encourage homesteading.
