Joe Pye Weed

Joe Pye Weed is also known as Gravelroot, Trumpet-weed, Gravelweed, Jopi Weed, Queen-of-the-Meadow Root and Purple Boneset. It earned the name Joe Pye after an American Indian named Jopi or Joe-pye who used this plant to cure illness.

This plant has long been popular with Native Americans who used it frequently to cure ague. Although in the United States Joe Pye is considered a wildflower, it is prized in England as an ornamental plant for cottage gardens. Joe Pye Weed is definitely a lovely addition to any garden with purple blooms from mid-summer through autumn. The fresh root is used medicinally.

For the Medicine Cabinet

Joe Pye Weed is excellent for kidney problems as it works as a diuretic. It works as a mild sedative that will soothe frazzled nerves. It eases swelling of the soft tissues.

It eases the pain of a bladder infection, and is the remedy for blood in the urine and for gravel - a condition where a sandy or gritty substance collects in the bladder or ureters. Joe Pye Weed is also helpful for those who have gout or rheumatism.

Growing Tips

When starting Joe Pye Weed from seed either plant it in the fall or start it in the winter in your cold frame. Then transplant the seedlings in the spring.

This plant can grow anywhere from 2 to 3 feet tall to over 5 feet tall, depending on how much sun it receives, so take care where you decide to place it in your garden.

Joe Pye Weed thrives on low, swampy ground that has full sun or part shade so do keep your soil moist, but do not overwater.
