How to Make Glycerin Soap

Learning to make glycerin soap is a great place to start if you are new to soapmaking or are looking for a fun project to do with your kids. These "melt and pour" soaps are easy and convenient to use. Best of all, they don't require using lye.

These soap bases make beautiful soaps that can be given as gifts or sold, if you are looking for a homesteading income.

Basic Melt and Pour
Soap Making Steps:

The first thing you will have to do to make glycerin soap is cut your chosen soap base into cubes. The great thing about the soaps I have listed below is they have handy perforated grids that give you a guideline where to cut your soap.

Because of the gentle ingredients in these soaps, they should not be heated in a microwave. If you do, your bars won't produce any lather. Instead use a double boiler. Heat your water to boiling in the bottom pot of a double boiler. Then, reduce heat to simmer. In the top pot of the boiler, add the soap cubes, and then stir frequently until your soap base cubes have melted.

Immediately remove your melted soap from off the stove, and let it cool slightly. As the soap base cools, stir it frequently. Now is the time to add your essential oils or fragrance, and stir well. After the soap has cooled slightly, it can be poured into plastic molds. Your soap should be ready to unmold within 2 hours.

Try Some of These Fabulous
Glycerin Soap Bases

If you want to make glycerin soap, you can't beat the bases I have recommended on this page. These formulations are gentle on the skin and do not contain unnecessary preservatives unless required by the specific ingredients. The manufacturers of these bases have avoided the use of harsh chemicals to the fullest extent possible.

These bases come in 2 pound "blocks" that are approximately 1" thick. Each block has perforated lines that make it easy to cut the block into small cubes for more even melting.

Preservatives do not need to be added to your soap when you make glycerin soap with these bases, unless you are using milk, fruit or other fragile ingredients. Use about .5 - 1 oz. fragrance oil or .5 oz. of essential oil per pound of soap.

You will need to experiment with the amount of fragrance or essential oil to add when you make glycerin soap as it can vary depending on the oil's aromatic strength.

Cosmetic Clays can be used as natural colorants when you make glycerin soap. Dry ingredients such as clays, oatmeal, herbs or fruit seeds should be added at a rate of about 1 tablespoon per lb. of soap.

This base will not suspend heavy particles, so try to add solid ingredients when the soap has cooled slightly. Do not overheat or microwave these soap bases as the high heat will ruin the lather and make the soap brittle. When you make glycerin soap, you should wrap it up in paper or some other form of packaging immediately after removing it from molds to keep condensation off your bars. If you're planning to sell these soaps or give them as gifts, you can remove any fingerprints on your soaps with a little bit of alcohol.

Try one of the following bases the next time you want to make glycerin soap.
