Making Cheese
Making cheese is surprisingly easy and a great way to always have cheese on hand even in emergency situations.
Homesteading Self Reliance
The beauty of making cheese is you can make cheese from powdered milk, and it will be far better than why you can buy at the store.
The best part is, you can buy milk in bulk and have it on hand in an emergency.
Just recently we had a nasty ice and snow storm hit our area and we ran out of cheese.
I was able to make cheese from our powdered milk supply.
Making Cheese An Essential of Frugal Living

This is the first stage of making cheese; after adding citric acid and water, I slowly heat the milk
A couple of months ago, I bought 50 pounds of regular, powdered milk and paid about $90, including shipping.
Fifty pounds of powdered, regular milk will make 63 gallons of milk, which in turn will make a little over 63 pounds of cheese.
I paid $6.50 American for a bottle of rennet (2009 prices), and another $6 for citric acid.
Total cost for one pound of cheese is about $3.20.
That means making cheese saves you about half the price of buying ready-made cheese in the store.
Surprisingly Easy
I have always been intimidated at the prospect of making cheese, but it is amazingly easy.
If you are making cheese from powdered milk, you will have to mix your powdered milk with water the day before you make your cheese.

This is the end result of making cheese; it might not look like much, but it tastes good.
Also, for best results, you should add either buttermilk or cream to your milk before making cheese.
I usually add about a tablespoon of buttermilk to about half a gallon of milk.
Making cheese is both satisfying and fun.
I can't wait to try other types of cheese, like cheddar and feta cheese.
