Roast Pork Loin Cooking Time

Roast pork loin cooking time is just around the corner, especially if you're a homesteader finishing pigs for the first time.

We recently butchered our hogs and I now have several roasts sitting in my freezer. We suddenly have cuts of meat we could never before afford. Are you in the same boat? If you've never been able to afford a roast cut before, you may find cooking techniques a bit bewildering. Here are some tips on producing a delicious pork loin roast.

Before You Begin

Take the time to invest in a simple meat thermometer (available in both Target and Wal Mart stores) to make certain your meat is properly cooked.

The Benefits of a Roasting Rack

A roasting rack will produce a far more satisfying roast pork loin cooking time and is well worth the minor investment. By using a rack, the hot air circulates around the meat, allowing it to cook evenly without burning on the bottom.

Thought About Using Your Cast Iron Skillet
As a Roasting Pan?

If you haven't, you should. Your cast iron skillet makes an excellent roasting pan because the cast iron heats evenly and provides a far superior roasting environment. Use a round cake rack in your skillet for a makeshift roasting rack. It will help make your roast pork loin cooking time a great success. An eight or nine-inch wire, cake rack works nicely in a 15-inch skillet.

Getting Started

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. You will want to insert the thermometer in the center of the thickest part of your roast. Make sure it is neither touching bone nor resting in fat. Otherwise you will get an inaccurate roast pork loin cooking time.

Then brush the roast all over with olive oil. Once your oven has been properly preheated (about 15 minutes usually), place your roast on the center rack of your oven.

Finding the Proper Roast Pork Loin Cooking Time

Your roast pork loin cooking time may vary depending on the size of the roast you are preparing.

Estimating Your Cooking Time

Multiply the number of pounds in your roast by 40 and you will have the maximum minutes it will take for your roast to completely cook and the right cooking time. For example, if you had a three pound roast, the maximum amount of time would be 40 times three or 120 minutes - two hours.

Determining the Exact Cooking Time

The internal temperature of your meat should be at least 175 degrees Fahrenheit.

Once Baking Time is Complete

You may want to prepare gravy to go along with your roast. Transfer the pork loin to a platter and cover it with aluminum foil to keep it warm. Pour the drippings from your roasting pan into a measuring glass and allow it to stand for a minute or so to allow the fat to separate from the drippings.

Skim the fat from the drippings. Take 2 tablespoons of the fat and place it in a saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons of flour to the fat and stir until well blended while heating over medium heat. Gradually add the drippings and cook, stirring constantly until the gravy is thickened. Add extra water if the gravy becomes too thick.

Season your gravy with salt to taste.
