Small Garden Greenhouses

Small garden greenhouses are a worthwhile investment to get an early start on your garden and grow lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers during the cold winter months.

If you've ever sat in a car that had been sitting in the full sun on a wintry day, you would likely appreciate the benefits of a greenhouse. Sunlight warms the trapped air inside the greenhouse, converting the solar energy into thermal (heat) energy.

Why a Greenhouse?

Small garden greenhouses provide you with a longer growing season, extra sunlight and a great way to chase off the winter blues. Best of all, there are a wide range of greenhouses to choose from, starting with the basic greenhouse window and going all the way up to the free standing greenhouse. Here are some different options available to you.

Greenhouse

Greenhouse Window

This is one option if you have a limited budget. Make sure your greenhouse window is installed on the south side of your house or apartment, or it will get too cold in the winter months, and your plants won't grow properly.

You can either buy a ready-made greenhouse window, or build your own by taking the window out of its frame, building a platform out from the house at the window's base and then building a glass casing above the platform. Heat from the room will help keep the greenhouse window warm, and your seedlings will get the advantage of full sunlight.

Lean-to Small Garden Greenhouses

A lean-to greenhouse is ideal, especially if you have a small garden. Again, it works best if the greenhouse is attached to the south side of your house. It's also extremely helpful to have a door leading from the house straight into the greenhouse. That way in the winter time you can leave the door open to add extra warmth to the greenhouse.

A lean-to greenhouse won't provide you with as much light as a free-standing greenhouse, but you will have the extra warmth from your house, which will compensate for it.

Free-Standing Small Garden Greenhouses

This will take more space and money, but if you use plastic piping rather than wood or aluminum for your frame, you can build it at a relatively reasonable price. If you do go with PVC pipe, you will need to use transparent sheeting rather than glass, as the PVC pipe will only last a few years.
