Where Do I Start?

by Kirby Holmes
(Itta Bena, MS)

I have 22 acres of pasture with a home site. I still owe on the land. I don't have a lot of bills to pay off; just the land. I don't have a lot of money or credit. Where do i start?

Cut Food Costs by Gardening
by: Sue Merriam

Hello Kirby,

Here's the good news; you don't have a lot of bills to pay off, and that puts you way ahead of the game. Work on paying off your land and keeping your costs low.

Start by putting in a garden. That's one of the best ways to cut down on costs and provide yourself with the best, healthiest food out there.

Order some vegetable seeds and store them properly so they will last more than one season. Start your seeds indoors for a good head start and then keep your garden well weeded and watered.

As you can afford it, start investing in canning supplies and learn how to can your extra harvest. And, of course, learn how to cook things from scratch for much healthier, low-cost eating.

When you can afford it, invest in some chickens. They will supply you with a good supply of meat and eggs. A flock of 20 hens will supply you with plenty of eggs as well as some to sell to help pay with feed costs.

Down the road, consider looking into beekeeping, as this is a good way to provide excellent pollination for your garden and earn a little extra money.

There's a good market for locally produced, raw honey. It's a great hobby that can provide you with a good, part-time income.

Good luck, and enjoy that acreage!
