Emergency Medical Preparedness

Emergency medical preparedness goes beyond having a simple first aid kit, especially if you or someone in your family is dependent upon prescription medications for good health or even survival.

Recently I read the novel One Second After which describes what life would be like should an electro-magnetic pulse - also known as an EMP - go off. An EMP occurs when an atomic bomb is detonated up in the atmosphere, where it wouldn't destroy a city per se, but instead fry all circuitry and computers within an up to 1,000 mile radius.

Such an occurrence would be just as disastrous as an atomic bomb blast, especially since these days we are dependent upon computers for everything - from our power generators to the very automobiles we drive. Your local supermarkets and pharmacies typically have products trucked in on a daily basis, which means if an EMP occurs, your local pharmacy would quickly run out of crucial medicines you and your loved ones need for well-being and even survival.

It's always a good idea to have a fully stocked emergency kit on hand.
It's possible that an event like an EMP might never happen. If not, that's great, but emergency medical preparedness is just like any other insurance. It never hurts to have it on hand in case the unthinkable happens. It would also be a good idea to have an extra supply of your prescription medications on hand in case of runaway inflation or a collapse of the economy.

Emergency Medical Preparedness
Stocking Up on Prescription Meds

With the exception of narcotics, you can generally obtain extra supplies of any needed prescription medications, although you probably won't be able to get your insurance company to pay for them. The easiest way to get extra prescription medications for an emergency is to simply talk to your doctor. Explain how you'd like to have some extra medications on hand in case of some disaster. He might grin at your "over concern", but he might also write out the prescription. But he certainly won't write that prescription if you don't ask.

Emergency Medical Preparedness
Buying Your Meds Elsewhere

Having a fully stocked homeopathic remedy kit is also a good idea.
You could also buy prescriptions from Mexico, if you happen to be heading down south. The border patrols generally aren't concerned about transporting medicine across the border unless you are carrying an illegal narcotic.

You can also order many generic medications online. I've known people who have successfully ordered medications from online pharmacy.

Natural Remedies

Also, be sure to have a good supply of natural remedies on hand, including bulk herbs and homeopathic remedies.
