Little Acre Ridge

by Lisa
(Alma, Mi. USA)

I have been bitten by the homesteading bug. It started late last summer when I finally gave in to the tugging at my heart. That tugging started as thoughts just racing through my mind for a few years. Thoughts of little house on the prairie, thoughts of how industrialized, electronicalized ( No, I just made that up ! ) and how overcome this world had become with fast pace this and fast pace that.

I longed for a simpler life. At least one where I could take back some control and supply SOMETHING that I made here myself. I used to watch the "Little House on the Prairie" series when I was a kid and dreamed of what it would be like to live like that. Just to make use of the land you live on.

So even though we only have an acre, we are going to try to make all that we can from it.

We have started out with dairy goats....and oh my, they are so much fun. I LOVE THE MILK. I also planted a few small fruit trees but forgot to wrap them and the bunnies had them for lunch this winter. So...just waiting to see if any of them survived.

The garden will be going in and we are going to be getting a small greenhouse soon too. I hope to have some rain barrels rigged up this spring so I can water the plants with it. It's exciting to see what all you can do on your own "little piece of land"

If you want to keep up with all that is going on you can follow my website and blog at Little Acre Ridge.

Thanks

Lisa, Your first year sure sounds to me like you're on the right track. I am envious of your milking goats. I want them too. I do have a naughty goat that came with the farm; she thinks her pack animals are the chickens. I don't even think about putting a fence around her. Btw Laura Ingalls Wilder was born just down the road from me.
Good Luck
