Vacuum Sealer Tips
Vacuum sealer tips are helpful when you have just bought or are considering buying your first vacuum food sealer .
They can be a great way to prolong the life of your food and save money, but there are a few tricks to using them.
Here's the scoop.
Cutting down Costs
You're always better off purchasing the rolls
for your vacuum sealer rather than the pre-cut bags.
That way you can make your bags however long or short you prefer and you avoid waste.
Also, if you make your bags about twice the length you need them to be, that way if you only use a portion of your food, you can easily reseal the bag.
If you plan on vacuum sealing foods such as cheese or meat, wrap them in plastic wrap first and then pre-freeze them.
That way your vacuum sealer bag can remain clean and can easily be used again.
Vacuum Sealer Tips If the Bags Don't Seal

If you're not sure which vacuum food sealer to buy, the FoodSaver Vacuum Food Sealer is a great choice.
If your bag hasn't sealed properly and is letting in air, then either you haven't made the bag long enough (it needs to be at least three inches longer than the food inside the bag, or you are sealing something sharp that is poking a hole in your bag.
If you're sealing meat with a bone, fold up some layers of Saran wrap and wrap it around the sharp part of the bone.
If You Plan to Seal Liquid Foods
If you plan on vacuum sealing liquid items such as salsa or soup, put them in a zip lock bag and freeze them first.
Then vacuum seal the soup or salsa bag and all.
Invest in a Wide Mouth Canning Jar Sealer
One of the most valuable vacuum sealer tips I can give you is to invest in a wide-mouth jar sealer
.

This wide-mouth jar sealer
is one of the best, low-cost investments you can make.
Most vacuum sealers sell canisters separately that you can store items in that would otherwise be crushed by the sealer, such as soft cheeses, crackers, oatmeal and other fragile items.
But by investing in this low-cost, simple little sealer, you can store your foods in a large, wide-mouth canning jar
, cover it with a new lid and then seal it shut with your vacuum sealer and the attachment.
While it won't take the place of canning, it will keep dry goods and other foods up to five times longer.
For Flours and Other Finely Ground Foods
After you have placed these foods in your jar or canister, lay a paper towel or paper coffee filter on the top to keep dust from getting sucked up into the suction tube.
